What is Psychotherapy?

According to the American Psychiatric Association:

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.

Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life; the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one; and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issues. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.  Learn more

What to expect?

The goal of therapy is to support clients in getting what they want out of life and to feel good while in the process. Whether it is making a life change, working on a relationship, or resolving an issue that they have not been able to get a handle on, therapy can help clients develop the necessary tools and insight to navigate through life's challenges.

It is normal to have conflicting feelings about embarking into the therapeutic process. During the initial session I will discuss clients' goals and what to expect from the process. Individual sessions last 45 minutes and are typically on a weekly basis. Couple and family sessions last one hour. I view therapy as a collaborative process. I regularly review progress with clients to assess if they are feeling satisfied with our work and what changes need to be made accordingly. I want clients' experiences to be transformative and informative. As I work with clients towards their goals we will discuss the tools they are gaining and explore how they relate to, and can be used in, other areas of their life.

I am trained in a variety of clinical interventions- including cognitive, psychodynamic, relational, and coaching- which I use to best help clients meet their goals. My approach is interactive- we will work together to make positive changes.
